How to Get What You Really Want in Life

By August 13, 2014 Courage, Life
how to get what you want

In this post I’m going to share with the #1 reason why people don’t always get what they want out of life and what to do about it.

Here’s the thing.

If you’re in a position in your life right now where you don’t have the time, money, business, career, health, relationship, happiness or anything at all that you thought you’d achieve by now then obviously something’s up.

Many people, myself included have spent countless hours setting goals and chasing them down like a dog chasing a moving car only to be left exhausted and not knowing what to do next. There’s some basic things that need to be understood before we can go from where you are now to what you want to have, be or do in life.

The first step is to understand that the life that you have created now has come from the beliefs, habits and skills you’ve developed in the past. Quite often, what we ‘think’ we want and what we ‘believe’ we deserve can be too different thing.

Let me give you an example.

Let’s say that you really want to quit smoking (this is what you ‘think’ you want) and yet every time you try to stop something happens to sabotage your attempts.

This self sabotage comes from our subconscious mind that has it’s own idea about what we should have, be or do with our lives and in many cases those ideas are held together by limiting or negative beliefs about what we do or don’t deserve in life.

Now this may sound a little ‘out there’ to some of you but keep in mind that the only reason you don’t have what you want in your life right now is because your internal beliefs do not agree with your everyday wants and desires… and until they do agree you will always find yourself struggling to get what you really want.

Now for the good news…

It really isn’t as difficult as you may think to turn this situation around. Regardless of whether your limiting or self self sabotaging beliefs and habits have been in play for 5 years, 10 years or 70 years it’s can all be changed in an instant. In fact, all change can only even happen right now.

There are 4 steps to moving towards what you really want in life at the speed of light.

  1. Know exactly what you want
  2. Have the willingness to want to change and get uncomfortable for awhile
  3. Make it a must
  4. Take unstoppable action Let’s look at these 4 steps in a bit more detail…

1. Know exactly what you want

I’m going to keep this simple. There’s a world of difference between ‘wishing’ your life were better and being 100% clear about what you want.

The first is nothing more than a pipe dream with no substance while the second enables you to get focused on a specific result you want to achieve.

In other words, the more clarity you have on what you really want and the time-frame by which you want to achieve it, the sooner it will happen.

If there is no time-frame attached to your result then it’s nothing more than a pipe dream. So make sure that anytime you want to make a change that you get specific about the change and the time-frame by which you’ll achieve it. And… most importantly, write it down and look at it every single day until it’s done!

2. Have the willingness to want to change and get uncomfortable for awhile

This may not be the most popular statement but nonetheless is highly applicable. Any change, regardless of how big or small will require doing things that are new or different. Unfortunately for many people they just don’t like change.

Even if it means that they’ll be better off in terms of happiness and quality of life they cling to what they know and are comfortable with because they don’t want to get uncomfortable. The crazy thing is that they are already uncomfortable.

The thing is that we can numb ourselves to the obvious discomfort or misery of our circumstances and justify why we can’t change them. This justification is your ego lying to you and telling you it’s okay to stay small and not get what you deserve out of life.

The way to break this habit is real simple – start saying ‘YES’ to change.

This is a mental habit you can develop until it becomes a way of life for you. Just by doing this one thing you will multiply your successes in life one hundred fold.

Getting uncomfortable does not mean that your life is chaos and overwhelming. It means that you stop settling for second best and do whatever you need to do to turn your life around to where you want it to be.

3. Make it a must

This one is real simple… if something is important enough to you then you will never give up on it, no matter what obstacles or challenges come your way.

The opposite of making your wants and desires a must in your life is to make excuses for why you don’t achieve them. As one of my teachers once said, “You know Michael, the buck stops with you.” This was the moment I finally realized that the only reason I wasn’t where I wanted to be at that time was me.

I then stopped looking for things outside of me to make my life better and got on with becoming the master of my own destiny.

4. Take unstoppable action

This one speaks for itself. In the example of quitting smoking. Let’s say you try for one day to quit smoking and then decide it’s too hard because of the emotional roller coaster you find yourself on so you quit and never try again.

That is not unstoppable action, that is giving up.

The difference between people that get what they want and people that don’t is whether they quit or not. Unstoppable action means that no matter what obstacles be they mental, emotional, physical or other that you will find a way through, around, under or over the obstacle so you can keep moving forward.

This laser like focus and commitment to success is what will get you there… and along the way with each new challenge that you overcome, you will get stronger and stronger.

That’s when life gets real fun because now you not only have the mental power and emotional fortitude to forge any path you want to build in life to whatever destination you like, you have something so much more valuable.

You have Personal Power! And with personal power comes unlimited possibilities in your life.

I’ll leave you with the thoughts that you only get 1 chance at the life you have and that there really isn’t any time to waste on putting things off until tomorrow or indulging in lazy habits.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring or even if you’ll be here, so make sure that you are giving your every moment your best shot at being a winner at all that you do.

Most importantly though, remember to have fun along the way.
